SO WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR TWO SIDES?

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO CREATE A FILM DURING THIS PANDEMIC?

To say that this has been quite an "experience" is an understatement. I chose this script and production specifically because we are in a pandemic. With only two characters, we’re really shrinking the set size. It gives us an opportunity to think outside the box a bit and create some cool workshops for the students - therefore - when half the students are on set, the other half are back at home base learning new skills from our workshop guru.

I was inspired by two films when I wrote Two Sides. Celine Sciamma’s short film Pauline and her second feature film, Tomboy.  They really inspired me to dig deep and reexamine some difficult times in my life. And what I began to realize is that times have changed - but not enough. What I experienced years ago, young adults are still experiencing today: It is so important for these young kids to know that they are loved.

HOW LONG DID THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS

STORY TAKE?

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WORKING IN A FEMALE-MAJORITY ENVIRONMENT?

It’s the best thing in the world! Being able to see the next generation of young women filmmakers working together with their ideas and creative solutions is so inspiring: I learn from them as much as they learn from me. It truly is magical to work in this environment.

This film actually did not take that long to write once I was struck with the idea. I began drafting the script right away. It just came flooding out.

WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS FILM?

My goal is that young audiences will watch this film and understand that they can persevere - there is a community out there that understands, loves, and accepts them for who they are.
